15 Google reCAPTCHA Privacy Policy

Our highest priority is to ensure that our website is protected in the best possible way and secure for you and for us. To guarantee this, we use Google reCAPTCHA from Google Inc. (1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043, USA). reCAPTCHA allows us to determine whether you are really a person made from flesh and blood, rather than a robot or other spam software. We consider any unwanted information that we receive electronically to be spam. In a typical CAPTCHA, you usually have to solve a text or image puzzle for verification. With reCAPTCHA from Google, we do not usually have to bother you with puzzles like this. In most cases, all you have to do is tick a box to confirm that you are not a bot. With the new Invisible reCAPTCHA version, you don’t even need to tick a box. This Privacy Policy explains how this works and, especially, which data is used for this.

What is reCAPTCHA?

reCAPTCHA is a free CAPTCHA service from Google that protects websites against spam software and misuse by non-human visitors. This service is most commonly used when you fill in forms on the internet. A CAPTCHA service is an automatic Turing test designed to ensure that an action online is undertaken by a person, not a bot. In the conventional Turing test (named after mathematician Alan Turing), a person differentiates between a bot and a person. In CAPTCHAs, a computer or software program does this. Conventional CAPTCHAs work with small tasks that are easy for a human to solve, but present significant difficulties for machines. With reCAPTCHA, you no longer have to actively solve a puzzle. The tool uses modern risk techniques to differentiate people from bots. All you have to do is tick the box labelled “I am not a robot”; with Invisible reCAPTCHA, not even that. With reCAPTCHA, a JavaScript element is incorporated into the source text. The tool then runs in the background, analysing the user behaviour. The software uses these user actions to calculate a CAPTCHA score. Using this score, Google calculates the probability that you are a person even before the CAPTCHA entry. reCAPTCHA and CAPTCHAs in general are used whenever there is a risk that bots could manipulate or misuse certain actions (such as registrations, surveys etc.).

Why do we use reCAPTCHA on our website?

We only want to welcome people made from flesh and blood to our website. Bots and spam software of all kinds should stay at home. That is why we do everything we can to protect ourselves and to offer the best possible user friendliness for you. That is why we use Google reCAPTCHA from Google. It allows us to be relatively certain that we remain a “bot-free” website. Using reCAPTCHA means that data is transmitted to Google, which Google uses to determine whether you are really a person. reCAPTCHA thus enhances the security of our website and, in turn, your security. For example, without reCAPTCHA, a bot could register as many email addresses as possible during registration and then spam forums or blogs with unwanted promotional material. reCAPTCHA allows us to prevent bot attacks like this.

What data is saved by reCAPTCHA?

reCAPTCHA collects personal data from users in order to determine whether the actions on our website are really conducted by people. The IP address and other data that Google needs for the reCAPTCHA service may therefore be sent to Google. Within member states of the EU or other signatories to the treaty on the European Economic Area, IP addresses are almost always abbreviated before the data is sent to a server in the USA. The IP address is not combined with other data from Google, unless you are logged in to your Google account while using reCAPTCHA. First, the reCAPTCHA algorithm checks whether Google cookies from other Google services (YouTube, Gmail etc.) are already saved in your browser. Then, reCAPTCHA places an additional cookie in your browser and records a screenshot of your browser window.

The list of collected browser and user data below is not exhaustive. Instead, it contains examples of data that are processed by Google as far as we know.

  • Referrer URL (the address of the page from which the user comes)
  • IP address (e.g. 256.123.123.1)
  • Information about the operating system (the software that enables your computer to operate. Common operating systems include Windows, Mac OS X and Linux)
  • Cookies (small text files that save data in your browser)
  • Mouse and keyboard movements (every action that you conduct using the mouse or keyboard is saved)
  • Date and language settings (the language and data you have preset on your computer is saved)
  • All JavaScript objects (JavaScript is a programming language that enables websites to adapt to users. JavaScript objects can collect all possible data under one name)
  • Screen resolution (shows how many pixels are used to display images)

There is no doubt that Google uses and analyses this data before you tick the “I am not a robot” box. With the Invisible reCAPTCHA version, you do not even need to tick the box; the entire recognition process runs in the background. Google does not reveal how much and exactly which data it saves.

reCAPTCHA uses the following cookies: We refer here to the reCAPTCHA demo version from Google at https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api2/demo. All these cookies need a unique identifier for tracking purposes. Here is a list of cookies that Google reCAPTCHA has placed on the demo version:

Name: IDE
Expiration: after one year
Use: This cookie is placed by DoubleClick (also part of Google) to register and report a user’s actions on the website related to advertisements. This enables the effectiveness of the advertising to be measured and appropriate optimisation measures to be taken. IDE is saved in browsers under the domain doubleclick.net.
Example value: WqTUmlnmv_qXyi_DGNPLESKnRNrpgXoy1K-pAZtAkMbHI-231565846300

Name: 1P_JAR
Expiration: after one month
Use: This cookie collects statistics on website use and measures conversions. A conversion is when a user becomes a purchaser, for example. The cookie is also used to show users relevant advertisements. Furthermore, the cookie can prevent a user from seeing the same advertisement more than once.
Example value: 2019-5-14-12

Name: ANID
Expiration: after 9 months
Use: We were unable to find much information about this cookie. In Google’s Privacy Policy, the cookie is mentioned in connection with advertising cookies such as DSID, FLC, AID and TAID. ANID is saved under the domain google.com.
Example value: U7j1v3dZa2315658463000xgZFmiqWppRWKOr

Note: Given that Google constantly changes their selection of cookies, this list cannot be exhaustive.

Where and for how long is the data saved?

Adding reCAPTCHA means that your data is transmitted to the Google server. Despite repeated requests, Google will not clearly state where exactly this data is saved. Although this has not been confirmed by Google, it can be assumed that data such as mouse interaction, length of stay on a website and language settings are saved on the Google servers in Europe or America. The IP address that your browser transmits to Google is not generally combined with other Google data from other Google services. However, if you are logged in to your Google account while using the reCAPTCHA plug-in, the data is combined. The differing Google Privacy Policy applies in this case.

How can I erase my data or prevent data from being saved?

If you do not want data about you and your behaviour to be transmitted to Google, you must log out from Google completely and delete all Google cookies before visiting our website and using the reCAPTCHA software. In general, the data is transmitted to Google automatically as soon as you access our website. To erase this data again, you need to contact Google Support at https://support.google.com/?hl=de&tid=231565846300.

When you use our website, you declare your consent for Google LLC and its representatives to collect, process and use data automatically.

You can find out more about reCAPTCHA on Google’s web developer site at https://developers.google.com/recaptcha/. Although Google goes into the technical development of reCAPTCHA here, it does not provide any precise information on data storage or topics related to data protection. You can find a good overview of the general use of data at Google in Google’s own Privacy Policy at https://www.google.com/intl/de/policies/privacy/

16. Objection to promotional emails

As part of the statutory obligation to provide a legal notice, we have to publish our contact details. Third parties can sometimes use these to send unwanted advertising and information. We hereby object to all transmission of promotional material of all kinds not explicitly authorised by us. Furthermore, we expressly retain the right to take legal steps against unwanted, unsolicited sending of promotional material. This applies particularly to spam emails, spam letters and spam faxes. Please note that the unauthorised transmission of promotional material can affect circumstances of competition, civil and criminal law. Specific spam emails and spam faxes can lead to high compensation claims if they impede business by stuffing inboxes or fax equipment.
